A hard working ladies football team, formed in 2009 in Merwe Village on the outskirts Malamulele, secured automatic promotion to the Sasol Ladies League after walloping Phalaborwa Football Club by 4 goals to nil in Waterberg in 2019.
The founder of the team, Basani Valencia Macebele said, “the team
played very well and showed commitment, and through unity, they have overcomed every obstacle to reach their goal. She said the team is motivated and harbours ambition to move up to higher levels.
It is through practice, and support from Collins Chabane Municipality that we are flying high and encouraging other ladies teams to be strong and not give up, said Merwe Ladies FC coach, Hitekani Hlungwani.
16-year old captain, Basani Penelope praise the risilient spirit of the team which saw them overcome the disappointment of being relegated, and bounce back in style seven years later, to reclaim their rightful place in the Sasol Ladies League.
“It was very hard for the team after our relegation from Sasol Ladies League, but as a captain, I am impressed and proud of the diligent work of the team. It is an honour for a young person like me to work with different age groups,” she concluded.
