Nine Limpopo Schools Registered A Zero Percent Matric Pass Rate

By Robert Maswanganyi

Limpopo Department of Education MEC Polly Boishelo, has on Wednesday morning announced that in 2019, the Province registered 93 932 NSC candidates. 70 847 candidates wrote all the seven subjects.

She said she was delighted to announce that the Province’s Class of 2019 has achieved a new record of 73.2%. This represents a 3.8% increase compared to the class of 2018.

“In 2019 the Department reduced the number of underperforming districts from 3 to 1. Nine out of 10 education districts performed above 65%,” said Boishelo.

Despite this commendable improvement, Limpopo Province remained ninth in the list of the provinces. It is the only province with the highest number of “0% pass rate schools”.

Altogether, nine schools with a combined enrolment of 65 learners failed to record a single successful matric pass, namely; Roedtan Combined School, Manawe Senior School, Makobateng, Kgabedi, Mahlaba,Matsebe, Kanama, Makama, and Mokhulwane Secondary Schools.

In her speech, the MEC appealed to communities to work with the Department on the rationalisation of schools with low enrolments so that they are effectively merged with other schools.

“This process is done to advance quality education and not for personal and sentimental purposes, as it is often misunderstood.”

“The small schools have proven to be costly to the system, unsustainable and not viable. So when we try to assist these learners, our community reject our help,” concluded Boishelo.
