Aggrieved residents of Nhlaniki, Gandlanani, and Nwamakena have this morning closed down, and barricaded R81 and R578 with tree branches, burning tyres and stones.

According to Giyani police the community members are demanding the tar road from Greater Giyani Municipality (GGM).

Meanwhile, on the 8th of this month GGM Mayor, Cllr Shivambu Basani has received the memorandum of demands from the disgruntled community members of Khani, Basani, Nwamankena and Makgakgapatse Villages.

The disgruntled community members embarked on the early morning violent protest closing down R81 with tree branches and stones after GGM had failed to appoint a contractor to construct a tar road since 2014/15 IDP Budget.

Police spokesperson, Ridgewell Rikhotso says public order policing (POP) have been deployed to the area. At this stage, there’s no injuries reported.

GGM spokesperson, Steven Mabunda wasn’t immediately reached for a comment.
