Mopani emergency services on high alert after flooding

The Mopani District Municipality is urging residents to be vigilant as torrential rain continues to cause flooding in some parts of the district.

Preliminary reports indicate that a child has died, one injured and several houses destroyed in the Greater Letaba Municipality by hailstorm on Saturday.  The affected villages include Sedibeng, Sefofotse, Maupa, Bellevue, Mohlabaneng, Jamela, Tlatja and Bellevue.

The Mopani District Municipality’s disaster management team working with stakeholders such as the local Municipality and Department of Social Development is still collating data which will guide on the approach to assist the affected families.

The Executive Mayor Councillor Pule Shayi has sent his condolences to the bereaved family. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, and also wish a speedy recovery to the injured child who is currently in hospital. We have deployed the MMC for Community Services to work closely with the disaster management team in coordinating our response.”

“The rain is much needed as most of our dams are low. We however wish to appeal to residents to be vigilant, especially those in low-lying areas. Motorists are also advised to drive with caution as most our roads are wet and slippery.”

The Disaster Management team is on high alert and will continue to monitor the situation. Members of the public are advised to report all emergencies to the Disaster Management’s Centralized Communication Centre on 015306700/0605511911.
